Manchester United has reportedly pinpointed Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško as primary targets to bolster their attacking options, though any move is contingent on the club successfully offloading several players to fund a new signing.
The club's leadership acknowledges that generating funds through sales is a prerequisite for reinforcing the squad, a process that could extend late into the transfer window, which closes on September 1. This comes as United looks to provide support and competition for their current number nine, Rasmus Højlund.
The £72 million Danish striker has struggled to find consistent form, scoring just ten goals across 52 appearances last season. While manager Rúben Amorim praised Højlund’s effort and power in a recent pre-season match against West Ham, his frustration was also visible after a significant missed chance.
United's transfer strategy appears to be a two-pronged approach. First, they must sell from their pool of unwanted players, which includes Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrrell Malacia, who were all left off the team's US tour. Amorim has stated the club will not sell these assets for less than their value. Second, they must decide on the right profile to lead their attack.
Ollie Watkins, 29, represents a Premier League-proven option, a quality Amorim has expressed a preference for. Despite Aston Villa’s public insistence that the England international is not for sale, United reportedly believes that stance could soften closer to the deadline. However, a rumoured £60 million price tag is considered excessive by the Old Trafford hierarchy, especially for a player under contract until 2028. Watkins netted a healthy 16 goals in 38 league games last season and is known for his excellent movement and assist record.
Alternatively, 22-year-old Benjamin Šeško offers a different, high-potential profile. The 6ft 5in Slovenian is a dynamic forward, capable of acting as a powerful focal point for aerial duels while also being fast enough to run in behind defenders. His versatility and ability to score various types of goals have attracted interest from Newcastle United, creating competition for his signature. RB Leipzig has reportedly placed a formidable £87 million valuation on the young striker, who scored 13 times in 33 Bundesliga matches last term.
The decision for United will likely come down to balancing cost, experience, and playing style as they continue a significant summer rebuild that has already seen them spend nearly £130 million on attackers Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, as well as teenage defender Diego Leon.
